5 Signs It’s Time to Replace or Upgrade Your Trash & Recycling Receptacles
Keep business waste containers looking and performing well for many years. Here are five signs that it might be time to replace your current trash and recycling receptacles.

Every item—from signage to trash receptacles—speaks to your business’s brand image and values. When any item is damaged, visibly worn, weathered or simply outdated, this can hurt customer perceptions.
Regular cleaning and maintenance can keep business waste containers looking and performing well for many years. But all good things must come to an end. Here are five signs that it might be time to replace your current trash and recycling receptacles.
- Cracks, Dents, Rust, Fading
Over time, even the most durable receptacles and liners can succumb to years of use. If you notice areas of weakness like cracks, dents or rust, this can jeopardize the structural integrity of the receptacle and lead to leaking or injuries.
- Capacity Needs Have Changed
Perhaps your apartment building is fully rented now or a coffee shop just opened next to your parks and recreation area. If you find trash and recycling receptacles are filling up faster than before, it may be time to replace and upgrade to something larger. To fully understand your waste needs, consider performing or outsourcing a waste audit. By right-sizing your receptacles, businesses can reduce maintenance frequency leading to labor savings.
- Prevalent Pest Problems
You see a trash receptacle; they see a buffet. Often accompanying damage like cracks, pests have a way of locating food sources in and around receptacles. If you notice more bugs or rodents in or around your receptacles, this may be a sign of a small crack or warping issue that is allowing them to get inside. Pests like mice, squirrels, crows and raccoons can remove items from receptacles leading to unsightly litter and also lead to negative customer perceptions. If you notice pests in or around your receptacles, it may be time to replace or upgrade to a metal or durable plastic container.
- Persistent Odor
Certain materials can absorb odors over time, leading receptacles to smell unpleasant even when cleaned and maintained properly. This holds especially true for outdoor receptacles that collect food waste, which can leach into materials over time. If you find a persistent odor that does not seem to go away, this can indicate it is time for a new receptacle.
- Lids Won’t Stay on Correctly
Choosing a receptacle with a lid is an excellent way to reduce odors, prevent pests and for outdoor units, prevent trash from blowing out and rainwater from getting in. Over time, lids may not fit as well as they once did due to warping, strain or damage. If the lid is damaged and the receptacle body is intact, consider purchasing a new lid separately.
